When life gives you lemons...

Well, it has been a while. Life took over a bit and the end of this year has been overwhelmingly busy. I know that I have said it before, but I will say it again: thank a teacher. This year has been incredibly difficult and we all need a big break!

Since I work on our district’s curriculum team, summer break isn’t really something that we fully get to enjoy. We go straight from supporting schools at the end of the year to a weeklong professional development and curriculum writing event, to facilitating a 2-day administrator retreat. Then, from there we work on consolidating and updating curriculum resources to gear up for next year.

There’s a point to all of this. As you know, I love a good theme and the theme for this year’s administrator retreat was “lemonade out of lemons”. Naturally, I told my boss we needed a lemonade bar. He was hesitant but gave in. I knew he would.

I themed the lemonade bar to all of the different schools, so each was represented. Each syrup had a fruit and herb syrup that could be mixed into some lemonade. I will describe the process below, but you can swap out the fruit and herbs for any combo that you like!

Here were my combinations:

Strawberry & basil

Blueberry & thyme

Mango & ginger

Blackberry & mint

Pineapple & jalapeno (I removed the seeds from 2 large jalapenos)

Cucumber & lime

I also used these squeeze bottles. They made things so much easier. People were able to just serve a small cup of lemonade and squeeze some of the fruit and herb syrup of their choice on top! It was so fun because all of the sites could try their own and it turned their beverage into their school colors. The two most popular were strawberry basil and pineapple jalapeno.

Any of these would make a fantastic adult beverage mix in as well. We saved some of the syrup that wouldn’t fit in the bottle and used them at the house. Highly recommend. I will have a few cocktail posts coming up with some fun ideas regarding how to use these!

I hope that as we cruise into summer, things are going well for you and your family! The buzz words for this summer are reset, recharge, and reconnect. I hope you get a chance to do all three!

Keep life fresh,
